· Making Toast by Roger Rosenblatt.(’58?). I think Roger attended Friends about the same time that I attended Plainfield High School in Plainfield, New Jersey. Like me, he is a grandparent. His daughter, mother of three, dies tragically and suddenly in her prime, leaving a young family in shock. Roger and his wife step in to have a second go at child rearing with three children under the age of six, as, of course, their son-in-law must continue his demanding career as a surgeon. Though grief-stricken themselves, the adults pull together to restore to the children as normal a childhood as possible. I love the image of this renowned columnist and essayist making perfect toast for the kids.
