· Vintage Magazine, Quatrième Issue, ed. Ivy Baer Sherman (’74. Ivy also worked at the school, but I can’t remember her exact title). I planned to discuss only books here, but each of these gorgeous magazines could well be called a book. Quatrième Issue is a surprise box, filled with pop-ups, fold-outs, books-within-books, spectacular photography, and wonders hidden behind windows and doors you don’t really expect will open. But they do. Among the contents are articles by Daphne Taylor (te) and Donna Rothchild, former Director of Development at Friends. Daphne writes about her unique quilts, which we get to see in all their stunning variety. Donna shows us her experience in Tanzania. Here, as elsewhere, the images and words complement each other. Other articles reminisce about bed jackets (I remember) and the author W. R. Burnett, who was once all the rage.
I read more than half of the books here on my IPad. Vintage Magazine reminds me of the tactile and visual pleasure that can come from real, physical books. PS. There was also an article on just this subject.
