· Through Indian Eyes ed. Don and Jean Elliott Johnson (te, 1934-2017) Jean and her husband Don put together this highly informative book about India, a country of great economic and political importance and with a continuous history of 5000 years. Jean and Don introduce each item of the comprehensive collection of writings by Indians, putting in context everything from arranged marriages to heartbreaking child labor. We learn of the traditions, history, and the place India occupies in the modern world. We see first-hand the tragic Salt March, where British colonial rule is revealed in all its brutality, the Bhopal disaster, and the push to make India a nuclear nation. I was repeatedly struck as I read this with how lucky we were to have Jean with us. I remember her graduation address when she showed us the power of paradox, which she learned from Eastern thought.
